Brother-in-law to John Rattray (NRS GD385), and godfather to Rattray's daughter (Registers of the Episcopal Congregation in Leith, 1733-1775, p. 30). President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Dec. 1740-Dec. 1744 (Historical Sketch and Laws of the Royal College of Physicians, of Edinburgh, p. 30), and Vice-President of The Society for Improving Arts and Sciences, or the Philosophical Society of Edinburgh (Life of Sir John Clerk of Penicuik, p. 165). An acquaintance of Dr Archibald Pitcairne and cousin and physician to Sir John Clerk of Penicuik (1676-1755). He acquired the lands of Listonshiels and Spittal, Mid-Lothian (Life of Sir John Clerk of Penicuik, p. 11).
