James Graham, Marquess of Montrose

d. 21 May 1650, Edinburgh

Chief of Clan Graham. Although he aligned himself with the Covenanters early on, he was later the royalist leader of Scottish forces in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. Executed for the Stuart cause, "he became a symbol of determination and loyalty until death" (Stevenson, ODNB).
