1083 (1083)
Thursday (‘twixtbetwixt 1 and 2 o’ Clock)
SeptrSeptember 29th, Michaelmass-day, 1748
,
My Lady Stewart sent a ServtServant
to me, desiring me R:Robert F:Forbes to
wait upon Her Ladyship imme-
diately
after Dinner, &and that
She would not detain me five
Minutes. Accordingly I went,
&and her Ladyship, putting a Let-
ter
into my Hands She had
that Day received from Lon-
don
by Post, desired to know
what was to be done in the
Matter? After reading the
Letter with some Attention, I
begged Leave to suggest, that
as many honest Persons as pos-
sible
should be allowed to
take Copies of the Letter,
in order to disperse them
through Scotland without Loss
of Time, that so the Alarm
might be given, &and then let
every oneeveryone judge for himself
as to any Danger he might
be in. Her Ladyship listen’dlistened
to the Proposal, &and immediate-ly1084(1084)
ly made ready to go to EdrEdinburgh with
the Original Letter. I begged to
be allowed to take a Copy of it
instantly, which was granted.
I took Care to have six Copies,
the same Day, put into proper
Hands. Here follows a true &and exact

Copy of said Letter,
yethe Hand-writing qre ofwhereof My Lady knew noygnothing about.

Knowing well Madam your
publickpublic Spirit and the Inte-
grity
of your Heart, I could not
recollect a more proper Person
to acquaint with a dark Affair,
wchwhich has lately by Accident
come to my Knowledge; the
Truth whereof admits of no
Doubt: Make in God’s Name
a proper Use of it. ‘TisIt is this
then, there is a List of 40 or
50 Names given into the
Hands of one or more Mes-
sengers
,1 of Persons who have
been engaged in the late un-
happy
Affair: With this List by
an Order of the Regency are
the Messengers coming down
to Scotland, attended by a Crew of

(1085)
of Evidences, who had serv’dserved
the Government in the late
TryalsTrials both here &and elsewhere,
&and had since enlisted them-
selves
in several Regi-
ments
. ‘TisIt is whispered that
these Evidences are to serve
before the Justitiary in Scot-
land
in order to convict such
as are excepted, &and who are
to be now surprizedsurprised and
apprehended.
Believe me Madam this is
no vague idle Story: Make
then such Use of it as your
good Understanding &and honest
Heart shall direct. And the
Lord shall bless you. —
Adieu

I.e. King's Messengers.

It is unclear whether this is a flourish or a letter following the M.
Could refer to St. James's Palace, but the Square seems more likely.
