To B.Bishop G.Gordon for yethe present at Burn-Hall near
Durham.

“AugtAugust 6. 1773.
Lately I had in my
possession for two days a fine Miniature-
Painting
of a certain amicable Lady. Tho’Though
it be excellent, &and has much Meaning in
the Face; yet, it is affirmed, that the Ori-
ginal
far exceeds the Picture. She is
called THE QUEEN OF HEARTS
in the Place of her Residence. I pl^eas-
ed
several persons with a Sight of it;
&and I wished for an invisible Cloak &and a
pair of good Wings, to make a speedy
Flight to Burn-Hall, to feast the
Eyes of some worthy Friends wtwith view-
ing
the fine Figure; but Wishes are
vain. It is said, a Print is casting
off at London. — I have been with
Andrew Lumisden, who looks well
&and jolly. The Liberty of coming over to
breathe his native Air was procured,
without his Privity or Knowledge, by some
Persons in Power from old Acquaintance
&and a personal Liking to him. It appears,
he 1993 (1993)
he is like to return to Paris. He promis-
ed
to make me a Visit, when, per-
haps
, I may have more Time of him.
I am greatly mistaken, if he be not
much to your good Liking.”
