To B.Bishop G.Gordon

“March 3. 1774.
You have drawn
a true picture of Lady Stewart. She is a poor
Creature indeed, to banish herself from yethe
Worship of God, when in such Circumstan-
ces
, as enable her to live where such a
Benefit can be had. This was very roundly
&and repeatedly told her. I foresaw her fix-
ed
Resolution some time before she moved;
for she began to mutter &and find fault with
the Frequency of Prayers; a most wretch-
ed
Sign to weary in well doing. Now
is 2004 (2004)
is the Time to tell you, that she is yethe
PersonX, who had the fine Pearl-NecklacePearl Necklace,
which she promised to give to a certain
Person
in the Event of a Marriage; but
no sooner did that happen, than she
hasted to dispose of it. O! O! O!
She has taken a particular liking to a
Nephew of her own, for her particular
Convenience, as he gives her a House
for nothing, &and furnishes her mostly wtwith
Provisions for House-keeping. Mean
time
Meantime
, he has no Children, &and cannot have
any, as his Lady is well stricken in
Years, and, wo’swoe’s me! is disordered in
her Judgment; but his Conduct enables
the Aunt to add a little to the useless
Heap, her Heart being wraptwrapped up in it,
as she is a downright Earth-Worm!
As you say, May God touch her Heart,
&and bring her to a right Mind
.
Many thanks for your Intelligence
about the Welfare of our principal
Friend
, whom, I hope with you, our o-
ther
Friend
will visit.
I have some Reason to think, no Pro-
posal
will be made to your Mr Smith,
a Check having been given to it ab initio.
Lady Gask never fails in her friend-
ly
good Wishes to you &and yours.
Saturday, Feb.February 26. great Rejoicings
