Stewart Carmichael

d. 05 Jul 1755

According to Reverend James Taylor (Copy of part of a Letter from the Reverend Mr. James Taylor, Thurso, March 8. 1750 with a circumstantial amount of his sufferings), Stewart Carmichael was brother-in-law to Sir James Stewart of Burray (probably brother to Anne Carmichael, Lady Stewart of Burray, but see linked discussion of genealogy). Forbes's registers show Carmichael's property at Bonnytoun or Bonnington Mills as one of the locations where Forbes performed his offices, and many mill employees were members of Forbes's congregation (see: Registers of the Episcopal Congregation in Leith, 1733-1775). On January 4, 1756, Forbes baptised Carmichael's "posthumous daughter," Stewartina-Catharine. Forbes's wife Rachel Houston was one of her godparents (Registers, p. 37).
