From the Latin of Dr K——
upon the Pr——[rince]’s picture, by J:James E:Elphinston
But lo! the HeroeHero meets our wishing Eyes:
See C——[harle]s himself in in living Colours rise!
Such master Art seems nature to command:
The glowing CanvassCanvas owns Apelles’s Hand.
What vigour flushes in the princely Face!
What Spirit sparkles in the radiant Eyes!
What bold Sedateness Foes &and Fiends defies!
O Virtue unsubdu’dunsubdued! O glorious Prince!
Thy Fame nor pen nor pencil needs evince:
Yet thee, in Council Sage, in Battle strong,
Thee highly worthy an Apollo’s Song;
Thee unelated with the first Success
Thee undejected in the last Distress,
Thee fain the Muse would sing; but wise, restrains,
Unus’d, unequal to exalted Strains.
