Monday, April 22d, 1751. Alexander
MacDonald
(Dalely’s Brother, see Vol:Volume
3d, pag:page 576 made me ^R:Robert F:Forbes a Visit, when
he put into my Hands three^^four Folio
pages, all in his own Hand-writ-
ing
, an exact ^Copy of which is as
follows.

Upon the 3d of ApApril 1746. LieutennantLieutenant
ThosThomas Brown
, an Irish Gentleman, with a
Command of 80 men, did sail with a
Tender from the Baltimore Man of
war
by CaptCaptain Ferguson’s order, which
layedlaid then at the Harbour of Lochna-
daal
at Sky, at whose end LdLord Loudon
had a Camp then came to yethe Haven
of Canna, and after sending for James
McDonald
Bailie of yethe Island &and Uncle
to Glenaladal, told him he was sent
by CaptsCaptains Ferguson &and Dove for some
fresh beef &and mutton, Viz 20 falcons,
&and so many wedders1, The gentlemen
asking his orders, was answered he
woudwould show him noeno commission of ytthat
kind, but if he would not present his
demands wtoutwithout furyrfurther controulcontrol he would
take them brevi manu: He had 60
armed men at his heels, the flower
of the Islanders was wtwith yethe P—[rin]ce, soe ytthat yethe 1634 (1634)
yethe Bailie Judged it Safer both for him-
self
&and inhabitants to grant his Re-
quest
, &and consequently sent off to yethe
meadows for yethe @above number of cattle;
and look ymthem up in proportion to the
number of yethe tenements the Isle
consisted of, But being wind bound
for 4 dayesdays in Canna=harbour, be-
hold
they complained to yethe sdsaid Bailie,
yethe Beef of yethe cattle slaughter, dslaughtered stunk,
and that yethe countreycountry shoudshould give ymthem
the same number over again, the
Bailie reckoned this both unjust &and
cruel, &and ytthat it was enough for yethe poor
Inhabitants to gratify him of qtwhat
they received already, Upon qchwhich, the
Officer was petted2, and said wtwith a rage
he knew where &and by qmwhom he woudwould
be served, by this he meant Laaig’s
Cattle qmwhom he heard was in yethe P—[rin]ce’s
Army
, so he hurls away his 60 armed
men, gathers all the cattle of yethe Isle
into a particular Creek, shot 60 of yethe
best dead, threw the old beef over
board, and woudwould not allow yethe poor
distreseddistressed owners to finger a gobbet
of it, no, not a single tripe of yethe first
or former, 40 of the last cattle be-
longed
to Laaig, 20 to the tennantstenants. CaptCaptain 1635 (1635)
CaptCaptain Duff &and CaptCaptain Ferguson aboard yethe
Commodore came again a little, or
about yethe 15 of Ap:April harass’dharassed all the
Isle, and at a certain night, qnwhen they
became fully acquaint through all
the country, they (I mean all the
young luxurious men among ymthem)
Combined to make ane attack upon
all yethe young girls &and young women
in all the Isle marryedmarried or oyrwiseotherwise;
But a certain Marine who had some
grains of Christian principles about
him advertised the whole, and was
obliged to climb and hide them-
selves
in Grottos &and in yethe hollow
of hideous precipices ytthat were
somewhat unaccessableinaccessible, which
rescued ymthem from the unhumanity
of those Libidinous hounds — A cer-
tain
company of ymthem came to execute
yrtheir Sensuality into a certain family
Evan MoreMòr MacIsaac his house,
from qchwhich fled 2 girls yethe Landlord’s
daughters, their moyrmother, who was fif-
ty
years old, worn wtwith Sickness &and wtwith-
in
a month of her time stayed at
home, as dreading noeno danger of
ytthat sort, But they missing yrtheir aim, &and getinggetting 1636 (1636)
getinggetting none of yethe females wtinwithin a
house roof, but that poor Creature, they
settsset a strong guard wtwith drawn swords
upon yethe door of her house, fettered
her husband, in order to quench yrtheir
Concupiscence on his spouse, Provi-
dence
favourdfavoured yethe creature so far,
that she wonnwon out through yethe
guard, and yethe Darkness of yethe night
ConcurrdConcurred to make her rescue for they
got out in pursuit of her in a great
hurry, and 12 of ymthem was at her
heels, qnwhen she meeting &and sinking
down into the very depth of a Quagg-
mire
Quagmire
, they Leaps over her, believ-
ing
she was still before ymthem, the
poor woman contented her selfherself to
continue yrthere all the night, till she
understood they were all back to
yrtheir Ships, but then she was soeso
much afflicted wtwith yethe rigour of the
cold, &and she being biggbig wtwith child, turndturned
ill, aborted &and Died next night; The
rest continued yrtheir sculkingskulking (in a starv-
ing
condition) till yethe men of war
saildsailed off, After yethe battle of Culloden
was heard fought, CaptCaptain Dove &and CaptCaptain
Fergusone
went to Canna Successive-
ly
&and committed several branches of cruelty 1637 (1637)
cruelty upon yethe poor people want-
ing
ymthem to inform ymthem of yethe P—[rince]: or
any of his Officers, After General
Campbell
turned back from the search
of his R:Royal H:Highness from the western Coast,
he calls at Canna, and hurls away
yethe honest Bailie prisoner into his
ship
wtoutwithout allowing him to speak
for himself, or as much time as
to shift himself or take leave of
his wife, At this stretch he was
brought yethe length of Horseshoe in
yethe shire of Argile, from Horseshoe
was brought back to Canna, then he
believed he would be liberate, but
instead yrofthereof, they caus’dcaused 40 of his
cows to be slaughtered woudwould not
permit him as much Liberty as goego
ashoarashore to take leave of his wife
or children or to bring his CloathsClothes
with him But brought him prisrprisoner to
London, qrwhere he continued upwards of
12 month notwithstanding of Loudon’s
Protection in his pocket
Sometime about yethe 20th of June 1746
CaptCaptain Duff went be3 orders of his superi-our1638(1638)
ouror Officer
to yethe Island of Eigg in
the shire of Inverness of Clanranald’s
property
for executing yethe disarming
act, Called yethe inhabitants into one
place, &and were strictly Charged to carry
wtwith ymthem all yrtheir Arms, upon yrtheir peril,
They conveendconvened , delivered up Some
Arms, but ^got onelyonly receptsreceipts for ymthem, The
poor people afterwards looked on them-
selves
out of yethe reach of any dang-
er
, But then some weeks yrafterthereafter,
Captains Ferguson &and Duff went to
Eigg, to look out after one CaptCaptain
John McDonald
, commonly called Doc-
tor
, broyrbrother to yethe late Kinlochmoy-
doirt
, qmwhom they heard to be under Co-
vert
in the Isle, After Examining
some of yethe Inhabitants to that pur-
pose
, they stiffly denyeddenied the CaptCaptain to
be there wtwith yrtheir Knowledge, with this
they sends about 100 men divided in-
to
small Corps in Search of him, One
Mr Daniel McQueen MintrMinister of the
GospellGospel at the Isle of Rum happendhappened
to be then at Eigg being a partepart of
his Parish, &and was both Agent &and Inter-preter1639(1639)
preter twixtbetwixt yethe Inhabitants &and the
EnemieEnemy, He Mr McQueen well
knew yethe very place qrwhere McDonald
was hideinghiding himself, and under-
stood
by reason of yethe narrow scrutiny
they were resolved to make after him,
they woudwould fish him out, therefore he
goes himself in Person where he
was, and after explaining him yethe
danger he was under, prevailed wtwith
him to Surrender &and yield himself
prisoner to CaptCaptain fergusone, Accor-
dingly
he did, he was first well us’dused .
But behold yethe unluckiness of the
poor Eigg people, for One of the
party
ytthat was traversing the Country
back &and forward Glens &and Mountains,
found out so many Stands of Arms
that they reserved for yrtheir own use
CaptnCaptain ferguson did not seem to be
much disobliged at this, but reflec-
ted
that notwithstanding wtwith they for-
merly
delivered him they still reser-
ved
yrtheir fill Compliment However he 1640 (1640)
he bespeaks CaptCaptain McDondMcDonald the
Doctor
&and earnestly desires him for
yethe poor peoplespeople’s own Safety &and good
of yethe Country he shoudshould call ymthem
all, &and perswadpersuade ymthem to come in,
the whole inhabitants wtwith yrtheir whole
Arms of all Kinds. And that he
woudwould give them full protections for
both yrtheir persons &and Effects that
woudwould save ymthem agtagainst any future dang-
er
, Otherwise, &and if they should not
come in heartily, all of ymthem come
to yethe years of discretion, &and to yethe
age of bearing arms, He woudwould
immediately (after elapsing of Such
an Hour of yethe day) cause his men
burn all yrtheir houses, destroy all yrtheir
Cattle, &and carry the whole men away,
Mr McQueen advises CaptCaptain McDonald
to send for yethe men wtwith yethe remainder
of yrtheir Arms in yethe terms spoken by
Ferguson, He sends some dozen
of Lads for ymthem, They were seen
comeingcoming in a Body, immediatlyimmediately Fer-guson1641(1641)
guson
ordered CaptCaptain McDonad to be
seizdseized upon &and made prisoner of, brought
into a house to be confindconfined yrtothereto for
anean hour; The men laid down yrtheir
Arms such of ymthem as had any, the
few old people ytthat came among
ymthem were picked out &and DismistDismissed home,
then CaptCaptain McDon:McDonald was brought
out of yethe house was striptstripped of
all his CloathsClothes to the skin even
of his shoes &and stknsstockings brought a-
board
yethe Furnace Barisdall,dBarisdalled4 in
a dark Dungeon, and to yethe poor
people,s additional misfortune, there
was a devilish paper found about
him containing a List of all the
Eigg folk ytthat were in yethe P—[rince’]s
service
, then yrthat CatologueCatalogue was
read, by yrtheir patronimickspatronymics in yethe
name of giving yethe promised protection,
qchwhich ilk one answered cheerfully,
and was drawn out into anoyranother rank,
so ytthat yrthere were noeno fewer than 38
snatched aboard yethe Man of war, were 1642 (1642)
were brought to London, from thence
transported to Jamaica, where the
few ytthat lives of ymthem continues slaves
as yet many of ymthem dyeddied &and starved
ere they a^rrovearrived at yethe Thames The
most of ymthem were marryedmarried men hav-
ing
throng5 families behind ymthem—
They slaughtered all yrtheir Cattle, pil-
laged
all yrtheir houses ere they left
yethe Isle &and Ravished a girl or two;
This relation I had from yethe Bailie
of Canna &and yethe Bailie of Eigg.
