Copy of a Letter (received on
Monday, AugtAugust 31. 1752) to me R.Robert F.Forbes
by Post

DrDear Sir,
I fanciefancy upon the first Sight
of this youllyou’ll say that AndersonsAnderson’s ac-
quantance
, begins now, to be trouble-
som
troublesome
but that is what I Cannot help,
for I most1 be pelting my friend, with
letters thothough there be little in them, of
either good SenceSense or StileStyle, but pray
what Coud be weell Expected from a
Skull as thick as a dealldeal board, if
there is any thing Good, Coud per-
spire
throw such thickness my incli-
nation
leads me to give it to Mr
Forbes
, upon which Account receive
it kindly, as it is diverting to me
to be Scrib[]lingScribbling Somthingsomething to divert
MelancholieMelancholy upon the Sad news of the
Young pretender’s appearing publickly
now at one of our protestant Courts
of the Empire and going publickly
to one of the Lutheran Churches
every Sunday, No Doubt youllyou’ll in
your merry Mood laugh at this piecpiece
of my News, but Alas Sir So true it
is that the whole Members of the
privie CounsellCouncil are summoned from their 1732 (1732)
their Country houses to a General
ConsellCouncil this Night upon it. I wish
I had him and his Adherents att
Tyburn; then we ShoudShould be quite of
our fear which (I am afraid) we
have more reason for now than in
former times whilst that family sfamily's
Bigotry in a principallprinciple quite Contrary
to ours Continued; but this young
Man
has thrown that Bigotry away
and is now at Berline publickly
a protestant, declared. What deplo-
rable
effects may this produce, an
intestinintestine war, loss of Blood, Confusion,
Stop of trade the Support of our Nation,
fayrfather fighting against the Son, the Son
against the fayrfather, women tearing oysothers
by the hair in a word Nothing to be
Seen but Desolation &and we Cannot
now Say that he’s the popish Jesui-
ticall
Jesuitical
pretender but a protestant
one, O that Word protestant may
Cause many of the unthinking foolish
Mob turn DisloyallDisloyal to our best of
Sovereigns in whose Golden age hade
flowrishesflourishes and wholsomewholesome laws are
made, but I hope Still that the
better kind most know the loss of wanting 1733 (1733)
wanting such a king and will not be
for a Change, but the Divell2 O the
Mob mob and protestant does much
in this unthinking Country, itsit’s
said he’s MarryedMarried too there, but
this I do not asertassert as a fact. I
leave this Saturday first My
ComplimtsCompliments to you &and Mrs Forbes
and propagate my DismallDismal news
to all your worthy BroyrsBrothers and
belivebelieve me allwaysalways to be
Your most hublehumble SevtServant

to be found among my Papers.
It is remarkable, that not a Word ^more
did we hear of the preceedingpreceding par-
ticulars
, but once or twice a Surmise
in the News papers about the Pro-
testanstism
, till Saturday, JanryJanuary 13th-
1753
, when David Brodie, Shipmaster
of Leith, did land in Leith from
Dunkirk, &and brought Letters along wtwith
him, importing, that the GovernourGoverner
of French Flanders
had notified
to the GovernourGoverner of Dunkirk the Marriage

✝
alias, John Farquharson of Aldlerg, pag.page 1702, &cetc.
1734 (1734)
Marriage of Prince Edward, or Charles,
with the Princess Royal of Prussia; but
this was speedily &and industriously con-
tradicted
&and suppress’dsuppressed in private Con-
versations
; insomuch that some, who
had received Letters from Dunkirk,
denied their having received any
such at all. Some few believed
both the Marriage &and the Protestan-
tism
, &and for so doing were laughed
at [] by others.
