Here a Child, ‘twixtbetwixt 2 &and 3 Years of age,

took such a Conceit of Mrs Forbes, that she
would by no means part with her, but stuck
close to her, &and went into the Chaise. She was
offer’doffered Raisins &and Money; but no, she would
accept of nothing. Positively she would go along
with us. An Aunt of the Child’s pull’dpulled her out
by Force; but she scream’dscreamed, &and sprawled herself
out with such Violence, that she was like to
throw herself into Fits; &and therefore, we took
her again into the Chaise, to give her a short
Jaunt, when, looking wishfully into Mrs For-
bes’s Face, she said, “I will go wherever you go’!
“Ay, but, says Mrs Forbes, what will your Mammy
“say, if you go with me?” “Indeed she’ll say,
“My bonny Ellie Welch is awa1!” Which words
the Child pronounced with a mournful Tone
of Voice. A Servant walked by the Side of
the Chaise; and, after driving a little, Mrs
Forbes told the Child, that, when we return-
ed, we would give her a RibbandRibbon &and a bonny
Mutch2. Upon this she was persuaded, though
with some Reluctance, to return with the Ser-
vant, but not till she gave us the parting Kiss.

A little before we came to the Bield,

by looking up into a very narrow Glen, ^on the Left Hand, I saw
some little Ridges of Rie.

We came to the Crook 25 minutes after 7

were before us; but we got a good Room
&and a better Supper.

needs have us take a Cheese in a present.

To vary the Scene, we resolved to return

by Peebles, the Road to which passes off,
on the Right Hand, over against the House
of Mossfennan, already noticed, where you 1932 (1932) soon cross the Tweed by a fine Ford.

Then you come in View of Drum-
ellier-Castle, in a Hollow on the left
Hand, an old RuineRuin of much Build-
ing, over agtagainst the Wrae-Castle; but
they are on different Sides of yethe Tweed.
