Since writing the above, I have discovered
by an odd Chance, that one great Dealer in EdrEdinburgh is
on the Brink of tumbling down, “that, to use the
Words given me, “he is tottering on one Leg, &and
“that nothing less than a Miracle can save him
“from giving Way.” In a Word, it is strongly
dreaded by those of Skill in these Matters,
that, before Whitsun–Wind blow, several
considerable Dealers will fail.
Some staunch Whigs &and Parity-Folks hereabouts
begin to use very strange &and uncommon Lan-
guage
, “that they are heartily wearied of the
“Gn Succession, being loaded with Despo-
“tism
, oppression, &andc. and drowned in Luxury
“&and a total Debauchery of Manners; that, there-
“fore
, they wish for a Change, even for a
“Trial of those that were dismistdismissed, to better
“themselves as they then imagined, &andc.” You
see with what Boldness the Minority posses-
ses
people. The Hearts of Men are in the
Hands of God, &and he can turn them whithersoe-
ver
wherever
he pleases. — There are some despairing
Folks amongst us, with whom I do not like to
converse on a certain delicate Subject. I chusechoose
to hope, &and not to despond, waiting the Will of
God with Patience &and Submission.
I have read the Remonstrance from the Livery, ^&andc. of Lon-
don
, &and a bold &and daring Piece it is. What! to quote the
Despotism of Charles &and James, &and that too as in-
feriour
inferior
^in kind to the present Management. Compari-
sons
are odious
! On what Side I mean, I
leave you ^to judge”.
