To B.Bishop G.Gordon

“AugtAugust 13. 1774.
With
great Joy of Heart, &and to your no less
Comfort, Dear Sir, do I write this, though
I wrote by Yesterday’s Post. Know then,
that having been this Day with the
intended Journey, he asked, “if Tho-
“mas
Bowdler
had ever mentioned
“any thinganything to me of the Affair be-
“tween
his Brother &and Mr Nicholas
“Brett
.” “Not a single Word”, said I.
This brought on a Conversation, easy &and 2047 (2047)
agreeable, upon the Subject of a
certain Event, which it is needless
minutely to recapitulate. The faith-
ful
Remnant having been men-
tioned
oftener than once, the Pri-
mus
used precisely the following
Words — To be sure, We must
take Care of them
, — &and repeated,
— To be sure, we must by all
means take Care of them
. — You
may be sure, I declared my Plea-
sure
in this frank Declaration, &and
will do all in my Power to forti-
fie
fortify
it. I received all, &and commu-
nicated
nothing. You see, Mr
Cheyne
X is wrong in his Opini-
on
, which you informed me of. All
Glory be to God for all his Mercies.
N. B. The Primus is not a
little displeased at the Singular
Conduct of Mr Nicolas Brett,
&and sees, that he loves the World
too much. Poor Man! he is not
to be envied.
Deus sit semper tecum tuisque.
Amen
.
A Dieu,
Dear Sir,
A Dieu.”
