Sir Hector MacLean of Duart

b. 06 Nov 1703, France

Lived between France and Scotland his whole life. Thomas Bowdler was questioned on his relationship with MacLean, testifying that he had not met MacLean but had corresponded with him (SP 36/80/2/3). While Prisoners of the '45 gives his rank as major in Lord John Drummond's Royal Scots, the Muster Roll does not list him at all; his involvement with the Royal Scots was a matter in MacLean's interrogation (SP 36/66/370), and one witness believed he was Lieutenant-Colonel in the regiment (SP 36/81/1/94). MacLean was released from custody in June 1747 (Prisoners, vol. 3, p. 146). Sources also conflict on whether MacLean died in Rome in 1750 (Sinclair, Clan Gillean, p. 246) or in Paris in 1751 (Ruvigny, Jacobite Peerage, p. 102).
