Thomas Bowdler

According to the ODNB ("Bowdler, Thomas (1754-1825)"), "a gentleman of independent fortune." He was imprisoned in 1745 on suspicion of correspondence with participants, including Robert Lyon and the Duke of Perth. His father-in-law John Cotton and brother-in-law Robert Gordon of Aberdeen were also suspected, and Bowdler was called the "'chief manager' of [Jacobite] affairs in London." His name, via his Shakespeare-editing son Thomas (1754-1825), is the source of the verb "bowdlerize."
