Copy of some Parts of a
Letter from the RevdReverend Mr
WmWilliam Abernethie (London May
6th 1749) to me R:Robert F:Forbes
I was yesternight at yethe meeting
of yethe Independent Electors in Westmin-
ster,1 but I don’t think I shall be there
again. It seems to be greatly upon
the decline. None of the Peers or
Commoners were present, nor indeed
did I see any bodyanybody almost of fashion
except yethe Chairman Sir Thomas Dykes.
I passed a few Hours however pretty
merrily as every Health was succeeded
by 3 loud huzzashuzzahs &and a long Clap wtwith
feet &and Hands. The 1st Toast was prospe-
rity to Ch—[urch] &and King: yethe 2d to The
Prince. The 3rd to yethe Independent
Electors of Westminster may their
example be followed by every City
&and County in Britain &and thereby endea-
vour to save yrtheir sinking Country.
The 4th toast was to the P—[rince] again.
the 5th Success to yethe next Royal
visitation. the 6th &and 7th were pri-
vate healths &and the last ytthat I witness’dwitnessed
was in these words; May the late ridi-
culous undertaking of fireworks illu-
minate the minds of every true Bri-
ton — Betwixt yethe toasts we were
entertain’dentertained wtwith some songs such as yethe Highland 1383 (1283)
Highland LadieLaddie; A Hero from fair
Clementine, yethe Character of a
Whig &c.etc. yethe last verse of every
song was sung twice over And a
Glass drunk wtoutwithout naming any
toast. N. B. At every health
the Company wchwhich was about 67
stood up. The Meeting is yethe first
friday of every month &and any Bo-
dyanybody who will pay 1 shshilling at his en-
try may go to it.
