To B.Bishop G.Gordon

“March 26. 1774.
Alas! dear Sir,
Lady Gask is no more. She was in a declin-
ing
Way when I wrote you last; but, hoping
She might get the better of it, I did not
mention it to you. She expired, after five
Weeks Illness, on Friday, the 18th instant,
half after 2 o’Clock, Afternoon, having rec-
ceived
the Viaticum, &and was sensible &and
distinct to yethe very last, aged about 75.
I may with great Truth say, Wo’sWoe’s me!
for the faithful are minished from a-
mong
the Children of Men. The Church
has not a more faithful Daughter, nor
the King a more steady &and loyal Subject.
She bore up under all the Trials and
Difficulties of Life with a Firmness
&and Constancy, a Mildness &and Chearful-
ness
Cheerfulness
of Mind, not to be outdone by any
other. When her Ladyship was in Use 2013 (2013)
of coming over from foreign Parts to do
the Business of the Family, She display-
ed
a Fortitude, Calmness &and Application,
endearing &and instructive. I admired, I re-
vered
Her. Gone She is, I hope, to reap
the Fruits of her Labours, &and may all
her Descendants tread in her Steps. Be
She with God, &and God with Her.
I heartily wish, the honest Man, his
Lady
&and Daughter were returned home soon
and well.
Tom Bowdler is in perfect good Health;
&and says, a certain Paper should be writ-
ten
in Letters of Gold. I am still en-
tertaining
this &and the other Friend wtwith
a Perusal, &and all are astonished, de-
claring
yethe like never appeared before.
Has Mr Geo.George Smith appeared yet
with You?
A happy &and comfortable Easter to you
and all yours.
Best Wishes &and kindest Compliments
from me &and mine to your selfyourself &and nearest
Friend. — Deus sit tecum tuisqꝫtusique. Amen.
A Dieu,
Dear Sir,
A Dieu.”
